Wait Patiently For The Lord

“Though a mighty army surrounds me, my heart will know no fear. Even if they attack me, I remain confident………… Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.” (Psalm 27:3,14)

Reading verse 3 in this Psalm, I thought, what an amazing thing to be able to say. The first thing I did is imagine being surrounded by a mighty army and oh, there was definitely fear. I felt a bit
ashamed to think that I could not say this as David did. Perhaps you feel the same? But Praise God, that He works in our lives to show us His truths. For after nagging at me for some time, His truthand refreshment was and still is a great encouragement.

Instead of thinking of the mighty army, we should be thinking about what it is that brings our hearts to have no fear? To have confidence even when being attacked. Instead of looking at the mighty army, lets replace it with a situation in our lives. This will help illustrate to us what is really of importance. Perhaps you have a serious decision to make? Or maybe things are not going so well at work, or school, or in your marriage, or you are struggling to put food on the table?

All these things can be storms in our lives. Like a mighty army surrounding us we feel in turmoil, afraid of what might happen. And yes, the outcome could be good or bad. Most of the time, it is not for us to know. That is the problem, we are still concentrating on what might happen or the trouble before us. We see a surrounding army which will always bring fear.

What we need to see is beyond our human sight. We need to see what really surrounds us. Are we not God’s children? Are we not a people that live by faith and not by sight? So then, we know that God’s promises are true and will always be fulfilled. Let some words from the Psalms show you what I mean: ‘You surround me with songs of victory.’ (Psalm 32:7); Let your unfailing love
surround us, Lord, for our hope is in you alone. (Psalm 33:22) and from just before in verse 1,

‘The Lord is my light and my salvation – so why should I be afraid? The Lord protects me from danger – so why should I tremble?’ (Psalm 27:1).

For to live by the Spirit means we no longer see the world as others do. In the end, it does not matter what troubles or storms come. What matters is whether we are surrounded by the Lord. By the mighty and impenetrable fortress He is. Why then (you may wonder) is it that sometimes these troubles seem to crush us, or beat and bruise us. I wish there was a simple answer.

Sometimes it is to teach us, to discipline us and sometimes the enemy is attacking to try to break you down and turn you away? One thing I can be certain of, I can trust God and know that He knows exactly what He is doing. We need to be able to say, ‘we put no confidence in human effort…. we no longer count on our own goodness or abilities, but we trust Christ to save us.’ (Philippians 3:3,9). That is what brings our hearts to have no fear.

If we approach a situation in our lives as ourselves, in our own strength, guaranteed we will have fear. How foolish we are, when the peace that God gives is available to us. Perhaps Jesus words in the book of Matthew will make it clearer, ‘Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill you. They can only kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both the soul and body in hell.’ Please see this truth, even if you feel that nothing is going your way. ‘Wait patiently for the Lord.’ His peace is worth every pain, every lesson and every attack.

Our call is to trust Him, the Almighty God. Again, I say, trust Him! You too will be able to praise Him and say, ‘Though a might army surrounds me… You too will say as Elisha did, ‘Don’t be afraid! For there are more on our side than on theirs.’ He said this because He trusted in the Lord and saw beyond this world. He saw the horses and chariots of fire of God’s protection, of God’s presence.
