When Zeal Bursts into Flames

When Zeal Bursts Into Flames

“I will not go home; I will not let myself rest. I will not let my eyes sleep nor close my eyelids in slumber until I find a place to build a house for the Lord, a sanctuary for the Mighty One of Israel.” (Psalm 132:3-5)

“And as God’s grace brings more and more people to Christ, there will be great thanksgiving, and God will receive more and more glory.” (2 Corinthians 4:15)

I love David’s heart. He was completely engrossed in the Lord. His heart was restless, burdened with the need to build a house for the Lord. When you read the words of the psalmist, you get a picture of an unquenchable zealousness. A passion for the Mighty One of Israel! For what is a home if the Lord’s Name is not found there. Or a house, if the Lord’s house is not finished and still needs to be built. How can we rest or sleep, for surely a passion for the Lord Burns within all those whom are His!

A passionate zeal is missing from many Christians today, missing from the Church. The Lord does not live in a temple made from earthly hands, nor does He live in a church building of stone or brick. “For we are the temple of the living God” and “don’t you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God?” A passionate zeal for the Lord starts with building your life as a house for the Lord, or rather, allowing God to build His heavenly temple within you. Oh that we would pursue God with the same heart that David had, as people after God’s own heart.

An immediate reflection of this zeal is an overflow of passion for others to experience the same. For we together make up the Church and we need to complete the number of people that are bought to Christ. For “all of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a separate and necessary part of it.” So there are two important parts of building a house for the Lord. A sanctuary has to be built for the Lord in our own lives and then in the lives of others. Both require a passionate zeal for the Lord!

Do you hear that sound? A sound of hearts turning to the Lord! For the real goal is the outcome or expression found in the house of the Lord. The Glory of the Lord is what our hearts are after or at least they should be! For Christ in our lives and the lives of others brings about praise and thanksgiving. How can it not? God’s Grace is too wonderful for words, an inexpressible joy! And again, “God will receive more and more glory! Amen.
